Unique spin on tie-dyeing
Includes how-to guide
Suitable for dark fabrics
Can achieve similar results with bleach
Instead of adding color to fabrics, reverse tie-dye does the opposite. Color is “removed,” which essentially means it’s bleached out. The Tulip Reverse Tie-Dye Kit comes with four bottles of color-changer solution, 30 rubber bands, three pairs of gloves, and a how-to guide. You can use this kit with any color of fabric. However, it works best with deeper shades, like black, navy blue, purple, and dark green, as these colors will provide the most contrast.
To get the reverse effect, you use the rubber bands to tie up the material, just like with a traditional tie-dye project. Then you add the color-changer solution and let it sit until it reaches a shade you like. After that, wash the garment, allow it to dry, and see the striking results.

Streamlined dye process
No washing required
Quicker turnaround than traditional dye
Harder to get a concentrated design with spray bottle
Traditional tie-dyeing calls for soaking fabrics in a dye, but with spray bottles, the process can be much easier. Check out the Tumble Dye Classic Tie-Dye Kit from SEI. The bundle comes with eight ready-to-use dyes, including pink, red, orange, yellow, green, light blue, dark blue, and purple.
Each pre-mixed, water-based color comes in its own spray bottle, which simplifies the dyeing process and creates less mess. Not only can you skip the soaking, but you don’t even need to wash the garments after spraying them. Just throw them in the dryer for about 20 minutes, and you’re good to go. While this kit doesn’t include gloves or rubber bands, it comes with enough dye to personalize up to 32 T-shirts.

What to Look for in a Tie-Dye Kit
Compatible Fabrics
Most tie-dye kits work best on natural fiber fabrics, including cotton, rayon, and wool. This can includes anything from T-shirts, sweatshirts, sweatpants, bandanas, towels, socks, and more. Unless you are reverse tie-dying, white clothes will achieve the best and brightest results. To be sure your colors won't fade or appear dull, check the packaging of your tie-dye kit to confirm the fabric you use will work well.
Skill Level
Luckily, most tie-dye kits are very beginner-friendly with helpful instructions, inspiration guides, or even follow-along videos. This means most options are suitable for both kids and adults. When tie-dyeing with kids, always confirm that the ingredients are nontoxic and child-safe.
Color Selection
Consider which colors you want to tie-dye with. Some of our favorites have upwards of 30 colors, so the color palette opportunities are endless. If your kit features fewer colors, feel free to mix different dyes to achieve the desired hue. If you're just beginning, look for kits with primary colors (red, yellow, blue) so that mixing new colors is possible and easy.
-
How do you permanently set tie-dye?
To permanently set tie-dye, wash your creation in the washing machine using cool water. Be sure to wash it on its own to avoid bleeding on other clothes. This should be done after the items soak in the dye and dry for several hours. Follow the directions on your kit for the best results, but setting often includes giving the item time to dry then running it through the washing machine.
-
Do you wash shirts after you tie-dye them?
Most kits recommend letting your shirt or other creation sit for several hours or even overnight. This gives the dye time to set into the fabric, thus providing the most vibrant colors with the least fading. Then, you can wash your shirt on cold in the washing machine with other tie-dyed projects or on its own to avoid bleeding. Just note that drying sets the dye permanently. For best results, follow the instructions on your kit.
-
Can you leave tie-dye on for too long?
Letting dye sit on your garments for hours after finishing allows the dye to soak into the fabric and create vibrant, lasting color. However, waiting too long (over 24 hours) can dry up the material and cause dark patches on your clothing, rather than bright colors. To prevent this, some kits recommend wrapping your garment in plastic wrap to keep it wet before drying. Usually, the instructions on your dye will provide the perfect window for drying time before washing, so be sure to follow this as best as you can.
